After at least five firtually flawless seasons of Game of Thrones on HBO, suddenly faults began to appear. Fan discontent slowly built later on and was starting to gather momentum by Season 7 before it then exploded across the hugely divisive eighth and final series. Martin, himself, had had progressively less direct involvement in the show as it moved away from his original source material. He has mainly remained silent on the backlash, but one of his biggest complaints was about an important and very early moment on screen that set the scene for an crucial relationship.

By now everyone knows that the TV series was forced to start creating its own storyline after running out of source material with the end of Book 5, A Dance With Dragons.

It is well-publicised that Martin shared the most important key plot points for the finale, but little else.

However, the early series and especially the first were very tightly bound to the books and the author. Yet, the show’s producers decided to completely rewrite one particular Daenerys scene.

In new book about the making of the show, Fire Cannot Kill A Dragon, it is revealed that Martin categorically did not agree with what had been done.

Martin previously confessed he had a problem with an early Season 1 scene that was purely down to budget.

It was supposed to show King Robert Baratheon going on a lavish hunt for wild boar but the early budget didn’t stretch to many costumes, sets, props or extras so the monarch was only shown walk back after the hunt.

But it is another scene from the very first episodes which the author thinks showed totally the wrong thing.

It is the marriage night consummation between Daenerys and Drogo and the producers made a massive change from how it is written in the books.

Despite portraying numerous disturbing scenes of sex and violence – and sometimes both at once – the showrunners decided to make the newlyweds’ first time together far less consensual and romantic than it is in the books.

Martin later said: “Why did the wedding scene change from the consensual seduction scene that excited even a horse to the brutal rape of Emilia Clarke?

“We never discussed it. It made it worse, not better.”

In the unaired pilot, which starred Tamzin Merchant as Daenerys, the scene followed the book but was drastically changed when the role was recast and the scene reshot.

Show creator DB Weiss actually claimed that the production team and actors all agreed that the scene from the book didn’t work for them.

He said:”(We) just didn’t have that amount of time and access to the character’s mind.

“It turns too quickly. It was something the actors themselves felt wasn’t gelling. They weren’t able to find an emotional handhold.”
