Donald Trump Jr. Claims Kamala Harris Isn’t Black Enough, Gets Annihilated on Twitter
On Thursday night, California senator Kamala Harris joined nine other Democrats on live television for the second installment of the party’s first round of primary debates.
For many Americans, it was their first time hearing Senator Harris speak — and for those who may have felt that the field of candidates is lacking in fervor, she likely provided a dash of hope and a breath of fresh air.
Harris challenged frontrunner Joe Biden on his recent comments about cooperating with segregationists during his time in the Senate, as well as his record on bussing programs designed to help integrate and diversify public schools in the 1970s.
According to many pundits, Harris turned in the best performance out of all the 20 Dems who took the debate stage last week.
But naturally, she also attracted the ire of detractors who were unimpressed by her passion.
And of course, since we’re talking about social media in the year 2019, many of the anti-Kamala tweets took a left turn off Discourse Street and wound up in the middle of Hate Speech City.
The most prominent figure to try and conceal his casual racism as legitimate criticism was the president’s large adult son, Donald Trump. Jr.
You might remember Don Jr. from such earlier projects as getting ditched by his wife after she banged Leonardo DiCaprio, or attempting to replace Martin Shkreli as Twitter’s most pestilent troll.
Anyway, as usual, Lil Donnie let someone else do his dirty work for him and couched his hate speech in the sort of coy ignorance that allows for plausible deniability.
Instead of composing his own commentary, Don Jr. retweeted a message from Ali Alexander, a conservative commentator who wrote that Harris “is implying she is descended from American Black Slaves.”
“She’s not. She comes from Jamaican Slave Owners,” Alexander tweeted.
“That’s fine. She’s not an American Black. Period.”
He later added:
“Kamala Harris is *not* an American Black. She is half Indian and half Jamaican.
“I’m so sick of people robbing American Blacks (like myself) of our history. It’s disgusting. Now using it for debate time at #DemDebate2? These are my people not her people.”
Alexander concluded, “Freaking disgusting.”
Don Jr. retweeted the thread along with the question “Is it true?”
Unfortunately for the professional offspring, very few people were dumb enough to mistake that for a good-faith query, and most saw it for the obtuse racism that it was.
Prominent political figures, entertainers, and activists including Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Michael Avenatti, and Nicole Byer were all quick to call Don Jr. out as the cowardly bigot that he is.
(Yes, Avenatti sucks, too, but he’s on the right side of this issue.)
In keeping with his policy of never accepting responsibility or speaking for himself, Don Jr. deleted the tweet and had his publicist issue a statement in his defense.
“Don’s tweet was simple him asking if it was true that Kamala Harris was half-Indian because it’s not something that he had ever heard before,” said his spokesperson.
“And once he saw that folks were misconstruing the intent of his tweet, he quickly deleted it.”
A disgusting display, to be sure — but Harris supporters can take solace in the fact that Don Jr. typically only sticks his neck out to attack those he’s deeply afraid of.
