MasterChef star Gregg Wallace, 56, has insisted his wife Anna isn’t “strict” with him over his diet and healthy eating regime after he quipped about covering up his decision to indulge in some desserts on his new Channel 5 show Big Weekends Away. It comes after Gregg recently revealed he had lost four stone by switching his diet up and exercising more.

However, the presenter couldn’t resist tucking into a delicious red velvet cake for breakfast while he was exploring the Spanish city of Barcelona.

He said during the first episode of his new series, Big Weekends Away: “I want to see as much as possible, but first, I’m on a mission to track down some holiday breakfast.”

Gregg could then be seen gazing into the window of a cafe, where some amazing cakes were on display.

He turned to the camera and cheekily exclaimed: “Oh come on we’re away aren’t we? They look good don’t they? Really good!”

While chatting to staff at the cafe, Gregg said: “Hello, Hola! You know the big red cake, it looks like it might be a healthy slimming cake, and that’s what we will tell my wife!”

The star burst into a fit of giggles before leaving the cafe with the treat in his hands.

After tucking into the cake, Gregg told viewers: “Soft sponge and strawberry flavoured sugary icing.

“Say no to cake, say no to life!”

Although Gregg joked that he would keep his purchase of the cake a secret from his other half, he denied that she is “strict” about him sticking to his diet.

When quizzed on the comments he made during the episode in an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk, Gregg admitted: “No she’s not strict, it’s just something that we do, we just eat healthily.”

The television personality, who shares his 20-month-old son Sid with his other half Anna, explained: “We’ve got a little one and there’s five adults in the house, everybody in here cooks, we’re just healthy.

“Lunch was a freshly made minestrone with some parmesan on the top and then wholemeal pittas.

“We just eat well! And dinner tonight is lean beef and noodles with chilis and nuts on the side, it’s a family of cooks and we just eat well.

“Anna’s not at all strict with me,” he laughed.

Gregg’s new show arrived on screens last week after it got delayed due to the beginning of the coronavirus lockdown last year.

The MasterChef host filmed the programme before the pandemic.

However, he revealed Channel 5 became concerned about how viewers would respond to the programme, which sees him embarking on various short trips around European destinations, amid new travel restrictions.

Sharing his disappointment over the situation, Gregg said: “I was disappointed because I’ve been desperate to see it go out and it was over a year ago that I filmed it.”

He added: “But I understand why the channel wanted to do it.

“They thought it was inappropriate, I kind of agree with them, you know these cities were locked to us.”

Gregg Wallace: Big Weekends Away starts Friday 12th February at 9pm on Channel 5.
