Halle Bailey Cast As Ariel In Disney’s Live-Action ‘Little Mermaid’

Halle Bailey, one half of the sister singing duo Chloe x Halle, has been cast to play Ariel in Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of The Little Mermaid.

“After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,” director Rob Marshall said in a statement to Variety.

Bailey will be joining a cast that includes Jacob Tremblay, who will play Flounder, and Awkwafina, who is set to play Scuttle the seagull.

According to Variety, Melissa McCarthy is in talks to play the role of the antagonist, Ursula, but she hasn’t been confirmed yet.

The Little Mermaid, expected to be released in 2020, will feature original songs from the 1989 animated movie as well as songs from original composer Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Meanwhile, fans of Lizzo have started a campaign to get her cast as Ursula.
