Jodie Comer defends boyfriend against claims he's 'secret Trump supporter'

Jodie Comer has assassinated naysayers about her love life after her new squeeze was ‘cancelled’ over claims about which way he votes.

The Killing Eve star is smitten with lacrosse player James Burke, 26, who hails from Massachusetts. But, far from cheering on her happy news, trolls dug around to allege Burke is a closet Republican voter and Donald Trump supporter.

The jibes had a physical impact on the Emmy winner, who told Net-A-Porter: ‘All this false information came out about him, and people ridiculed him and me and my family.

‘People took these tweets as truth. That was the biggest time my life has been kind of blown up and publicised in that way.’

The actress, 27, added: ‘A lot of people read things and go, “Wow, she’s this type of person”. And I’m like, “OK, I can spend my life and energy trying to convince people otherwise, or go, I know my truth and that’s good enough for me.”’

Mean tweets included one that read: ‘Jodie Comer after posting the blm hashtag on her story once and recording a video for pride then going back to her Republican boyfriend.’

But the TV star has mastered the knack of tuning out critics — she simply switches her smartphone off.

‘I feel like I’ve sussed it out,’ she told Porter. ‘But it took a while and got to a point where it was affecting my health.

‘You forget how accessible we are when we have mobile phones. In my head, it was like there is a line of people outside my front door who have nasty things to say to me, and I’m saying, “Come on in! Sit on my couch, tell me.”

‘When I realised that was what I was doing, I knew I just had to stop.’

And Comer says having a boyfriend who isn’t in the public eye ‘can be very strange and surreal’.

‘I’m very cautious of what I bring into my family’s life. It’s a safety thing,’ she added.

Asked what lockdown life at her folks’ home in Liverpool was like, she said: ‘There’s nothing better than being with my mom, dad and brother on the couch and us all watching TV. My brother and I got some garden games, like badminton, to play over the washing line.’

Fans’ show of kindness brings Ellen in from cold

Ellen DeGeneres has been given a boost by fans after winning an E! People’s Choice Award months after her show was embroiled in a ‘toxic workplace’ scandal.

The 62-year-old’s show was voted best daytime talk programme at Sunday’s bash.

Three top execs departed in August following allegations of bullying and misconduct behind-the-scenes on the show.

That led to the host apologising to staff after an internal review found ‘deficiencies related to the show’s day-to-day management’.

Accepting the gong in Santa Monica, DeGeneres said: ‘From deep, deep down in my heart, I thank you.

‘I am not only accepting this award for myself but on behalf of my amazing crew. They show up every single day, give 100 per cent of themselves, 100 per cent of the time. I love them all.’

DeGeneres, who has hosted the US TV show since 2003, also thanked fans for sticking by her. ‘I can’t tell you how grateful I am. What this means to me… it’s more than I could possibly tell you, especially now,’ she added.

Onward and upwards… Chris has the last laugh

Chris Pratt flexed his superpowers to seemingly become ‘uncancelled’ as he scooped an E! People’s Choice Award.

Recently dubbed the ‘worst Chris’ in Hollywood in a Twitter poll, The Guardians Of The Galaxy star was slammed for asking fans, during the pandemic and US election, to vote for his new animated film Onward.

‘Vote for #Onward for family movie of the year. Or else. You WILL die,’ he tweeted at the time.

Despite all the flak, and his plummeting popularity, his appeal worked. The Disney Pixar film won the gong but Chris, 41, steered clear of the bash — so was not on hand to pick up the trophy.

Out of Lov-ato! Demi got ‘unengaged’ in lockdown

Demi Lovato has joked about rushing into a failed engagement.

The Sorry Not Sorry singer spilled she was ‘unengaged’ when hosting the 2020 E! People’s Choice Awards.

The gag came after she said ‘yes’ to Young And The Restless star Max Ehrich in July, after just four months of dating.

Onstage Demi, 28, said: ‘This year has been the longest three years of my life. It started out amazing. I performed at the Grammys and sang the national anthem at the Super Bowl. Then Covid hit and everything shut down.’

Lovato, who survived a 2018 overdose, added: ‘I went into lockdown, got engaged…binged Pretty Little Liars, got unengaged, then went looking for aliens in the desert. So basically the same as everyone else.’

Ehrich claims he found out the wedding was off via social media.

Special Bond can give John licence to thrill

John Boyega has thrown his hat into the ring to be the next James Bond.

The 28-year-old, who blasted Disney for ‘sidelining’ his character Finn on Star Wars, is up for replacing Daniel Craig, especially if he can bring his Small Axe director with him.

Relishing the chance to be the first black Bond, the Black Lives Matter activist said: ‘Ooh! Hey, listen. [With] Steve McQueen directing? Let’s do this.

‘We can show them something different — we [would] still bring that sophistication — James Bond has to be James Bond — but we could do something with that.’

But to nab the role, Boyega will have to elbow out bookies favourites Tom Hardy, Idris Elba and Sam Heughan.

It’s all about views! Fans can hit the sack with McFly

Fans can now jump into bed with the McFly lads for the bargain price of £9.99 a month.

After dropping new album Young Dumb Thrills, Tom Fletcher, Danny Jones, Dougie Poynter and Harry Judd have launched an access all areas subscription channel, called McFly Total Access.

The foursome say it will be filled with exclusive video content, livestream performances, Q&A’s and a screening of their recent O2 Arena gig.

To set it up, the band invested in a Total Access HQ, in London, which boasts a recording studio and rehearsal space, where they will work on new material and give fans an insight into their work.

They say the venture will provide jobs to crew members who lost work due to the pandemic.

Fans can also become members for £99 per year, the It’s All About You singers added.

Liam’s Binging the changes…

Liam Gallagher is releasing a new track for the Action For Children charity.

The rocker, 48, hopes All You’re Dreaming Of will be ‘bring back some much-needed love and hope’ and says ‘Bing Crosby would have been proud’ of his song.

Perrie’s merry Christmas wish

Little Mix star Perrie Edwards hopes to find a small box under the tree from footballer Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain this Christmas.

Asked if she would accept a proposal, she said: ‘It would be a definitely yes from me, I reckon!’

Gillian: Why I quit Hollywood

The Crown star, 52, spilled: ‘I had a complicated relationship with becoming so famous so young and seeing the worst part of what the industry can be.

‘I hated it and wanted to get away.’
