Love Island’s Yewande Biala ‘won’t let racism hold her back’, says a close friend of the soon-to-be reality star.
It has been reported operations specialist, 23, was previously hesitant to apply for the ITV show because of ‘racism’ according to a close friend of the reality hopeful.
Yewande’s pal shared to The Mirror, that the stunning scientist – who now tries to find cures for cancer- was left feeling ‘uneasy’ after she saw the treatment of Samira Mighty, 22, on the hit show in 2018.
Unsure: Yewande Biala, 23, was previously hesitant to apply for the Love Island according to a close friend of the soon to be reality TV star
Samira was the sole black female among the crop of contestants in the 2018 series and during last years series, the show was heavily criticised by viewers, who complained that the show lacks any real racial diversity among its contestants.
Following the West End performer’s departure from Love Island, after she removed herself from the villa when her love interest was voted off, it came to light that scenes between the pair had not been aired.
Yewande’s friend from school, Eileen Top, revealed to the publication: ‘We discussed it because she was going, “Should I do it? Should I not?” I said, “Go for it.”‘
Hesitant: Yewande ‘had a lot of reservations, what would people think and obviously the racism which is what we are seeing now. It’s ridiculous. It’s 2019 and people are saying really terrible things’
She continued: ‘She had a lot of reservations, what would people think and obviously the racism which is what we are seeing now. It’s ridiculous. It’s 2019 and people are saying really terrible things.’
Eileen added: ‘But she thought it could be different. She’s black and proud and she’s not going to let anyone stop her.’
MailOnline has contacted a Love Island representative for comment.
Yewande previously discussed her decision to join the hit ITV2 series, with the beauty sharing: ‘I went to university at 16 and I’ve been in the industry ever since I graduated and I just feel like I grew up so quickly and I didn’t get most of the experiences that my friends did.
‘My friends travelled and did exciting stuff. I wanted to do something memorable and something different so I thought, Love Island. I’ve always been a fan and always found it interesting and exciting and different.’
However she added that she won’t be leaving her career for good: ‘I don’t really think I am leaving it behind, I just feel like I am taking a break from it. I have a post-grad so I can go back and I’d like to think I can go back when I’m ready.
Yewande revealed that she doesn’t have a set type, but if she had to chose her favourite male contestant from last year’s series she would have chosen Jack Fowler.
New experience: Yewande previously discussed her decision to join the hit ITV2 series ‘I just feel like I grew up so quickly and I didn’t get most of the experiences that my friends did’
Detailing what she’s looking for, she said: ‘I’d love to be able to have a good conversation, laugh all the time, banter and good vibes all the time.’
However if she does meet her dream man she won’t be ‘doing bits’, as she joked that her mum would ‘shoot’ her if she had sex on television.
Yewande said: ‘I will not be doing bits! My mam will shoot me, she’ll change all the locks and won’t let me home.’
Contestant: Samira Mighty, 22, was the sole black female among the crop of contestants in the 2018 series
However she said that her family are really excited that she will be heading onto the show, adding: ‘My mam is delighted, I thought she was going to hate it but when I first told her, she became the biggest Love Island fan ever.
‘My dad still doesn’t fully understand it, when I left he said “Have fun, see you soon”, he doesn’t have a clue. I haven’t told my sisters yet because they’re so young and I feel like they’d tell the whole town.
‘They’re the biggest fans. I was packing and I tried on this black polka dot dress and they were like “Oh that’s so nice, it looks like something people would wear on Love Island”, I was like “Oh really?!”
Although her family is very supportive of her decision, Yewande confessed that they were very shocked that she decided to apply.
She said: ‘My mam was shocked, out of my sisters, I am the most reserved so she never thought I’d apply for something like this and I think everyone will be shocked.’
‘Going in is pushing myself out of my comfort zone but it’s not a huge group of people and I am living with them and you get to know people as you’re going along so it might not be as hard for me to let loose and have fun I guess.’
Not aired: Following the West End performer’s departure from Love Island, it came to light that scenes between her and Frankie Foster had not been aired
With the aim of the game being to find love, it seemed unusual that viewers were unable to become invested in the West End star’s romantic journey with Frankie Foster as they did not get to see it on their TV screens – especially when they spent a night together in the hideaway.
At the time, Love Island said in a statement to Digital Spy: ‘As we have said before, it is not possible to show everything that happens in the villa due to time constraints. There are a number of couples whose time in the Hideaway has not been shown.
Upset: Fans of the show expressed their disappointment last year at other groups not being represented on the show
‘It is always our intention to produce a show that is a fair and accurate representation of life in the villa.’
During last years series, the show was heavily criticised by viewers, who complained that the show lacks any real racial diversity among its long list of contestants.
Fans of the ITV2 reality show took to Twitter in droves to voice their concerns over the lack of different ethnic backgrounds being represented – as well as body types.
One viewer wrote on the micro-blogging site: ‘Getting bored with every new girl being a white, skinny long haired blonde or brunette in #Loveisland… Just because you have Samira in there doesn’t mean you’ve ticked off the diversity box.’
Taking umbrage with the similar backgrounds the contestants share – including the parts of the UK they hail from – one viewer wrote: ‘Love Island need to bring in girls of colour/ethic. All this bringing in these Essex/Welsh white girls is becoming JOKE.
‘The show needs some diversity. Samira is the only girl of colour. We need body diversity to more thicker girls too.’
We live in a real world were some women and men aren’t all white or straight or have a built or skinny body,’ the viewer continued in a separate tweet.
‘This show has no diversity or sense of reality to it, i understand that it’s TV a show and this is what they deem to be perfect but that’s not real life.’
Throwback: Viewers were left upset that Samira’s full romantic journey was not shown but that there was a lot of focus on Dr Alex being unlucky in love
Another added: ‘We need to see more diversity in races and body shapes for the next Love Island series… How do you have 10 people in that house and only three of them or two are of colour?’
Meanwhile, one viewer brought up the fact that fans of the show have been fervently backing unlucky-in-love Dr. Alex George to find love, while his partner Samira – who has yet to catch the eye of any potential suitors – has received no such support.
‘Interesting how many people don’t see things from Samira’s point of view,’ noted the Twitter user. ‘The entire villa is rooting for Alex to find someone yet nobody gives a s**t about Samira. Just an observation.’
Another viewer took a tongue-in-cheek approach to the diversity row, by sharing a snapshot of Rosie Williams in the Beach Hut, alongside the caption: Big up the diversity on this year’s @LoveIsland though!
‘You won’t believe how important is is for those with different shaped eyebrows to be represented in the mainstream media.’
MailOnline contacted a representative for Love Island for comment at the time.
