Piers Morgan, 56, couldn’t help teasing his former breakfast show TV nemesis Dan Walker, 44, who he has been locked in a ratings battle with for the past five years, after he became the 11th celebrity to be eliminated from Strictly during Sunday’s results show. But as he and pro partner Nadiya Bychkova waved goodbye to the ballroom floor one final time, the former Good Morning Britain star saw the opportunity to reignite their ongoing online feud.

You came 5th, mate. She needed a better pupil

Following the results show, Dan penned a sweet tribute to Nadiya after he narrowly missed out on a place in the semi-finals after the dance-off against AJ Odudu and Kai Widdrington.

Taking to Twitter, Dan shared: “Well… what a ride!

“#Strictly has been a truly wonderful experience for me. I enjoyed every second. @NadiyaBychkova is a superstar: kind, encouraging, funny, clever, the best teacher I could ever have hoped for & a great friend.

“Thanks for the support & thanks for having us.”

Fans rushed to the comments section to congratulate the star on his progress during the competition, but Piers had other ideas.

Instead of some words of encouragement, he wasn’t about to let him have his moment.

He replied sarcastically: “You came fifth, mate. She needed a better pupil.”

As savage as his response was, it didn’t go down well with many fans who criticised the outspoken presenter’s choice of words.

One user snapped: “Absolutely no need for this tweet.”

Another agreed: “Unnecessary comment, shame people are like this. I guess it’s the world we live in.”

A third suggested he try his hand at the gruelling competition, saying: “Instead of criticising what has been an excellent journey of zero dance experience to being able to dance, why don’t you put yourself up for it next year and see if you can do any better?”

It comes after Dan was hit with a torrid of abuse for making it as far as he did on the show.

The BBC Breakfast host was told by online trolls that they wished “he’d break his leg” and “go bald”, while another told him “I f*****g hate you,” and a third said they’d sue him and his “s*** dancing.”

However, many others told the former Football Focus presenter he was an inspiration for many people out there and heaped praise on his commitment and enthusiasm.

Dan addressed the “uncomfortable” situation after his elimination, explaining to viewers: “The last 11 weeks have been amazing, I genuinely have loved every second of it.

“If I go back to the first day when we were asked to dance in front of some glitterballs, at that point, if there would’ve been a fire exit, I felt that uncomfortable, I’d have just walked away.

“But this amazing woman sort of grabbed me by the hands and brought me out onto this dance floor.”

He added: “I’m not a dancer, but she showed me that I can dance and that for me has been an absolutely incredible experience.”

The remaining couples through to next week’s semi-final are; AJ and Kai, Rhys Stephenson and Nancy Xu, Rose Ayling-Ellis and Giovanni Pernice, John Whaite and Johannes Radebe.

Strictly continues Saturday on BBC One.
