Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman is out on Netflix and could win Best Picture

The Irishman is finally out on Netflix.

Influential director Martin Scorsese brings us the gangster drama which is inspired by true events and stars Scorsese’s longtime playmate and Oscar winner Robert De Niro as the titular character, Frank Sheeran.

The film follows how Sheeran, a nightclub bouncer, is drawn into the world of the mafia after striking up a friendship with Russell Bufalino (Oscar winner Joe Pesci ) and then with his criminal associates.

However, Frank’s most defining friendship comes from his relationship with powerful Teamster and – all-round wild card – Jimmy Hoffa (Oscar winner Al Pacino ).

As Frank and Jimmy’s families and days become more intertwined, Jimmy’s antagonism with the mob mean Frank is left with some tough choices to make.

The Irishman also stars fellow Scorsese veteran Harvey Keitel as mobster Angelo Bruno, Emmy winner Ray Romano , Emmy-winning Boardwalk Empire star Bobby Cannavale , Oscar winner Anna Paquin as Frank’s daughter Peggy, and British actor and Boardwalk Empire star Stephen Graham.

The Irishman also runs at an epic 209 minutes – so there's lots of gangster drama to enjoy.

The film has already won huge praise from critics and currently holds 96% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

Their consensus reads: "An epic gangster drama that earns its extended runtime, The Irishman finds Martin Scorsese revisiting familiar themes to poignant, funny, and profound effect."

Naturally, with such high critical praise and industry love for Scorsese, the chances of the film being nominated at the Academy Awards is high – could it win Best Picture?

Let’s hope you love The Irishman as much as they do!
