Amy Winehouse’s dad was ‘charmed’ by Blake Fielder-Civil despite heroin use

Amy Winehouse's dad Mitch has opened up about how he was initially 'charmed' by her ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil.

In a new BBC documentary entitled Reclaiming Amy, Mitch confessed Blake was "charm personified" – but things soon took a sinister turn.

Amy tied the knot with Blake in 2007, though their relationship quickly became "caustic", Mitch explained.

They finally divorced two years later.

Blake admitted he had been the one to introduce Amy to heroin, though confessed he regretted the move in 2013. News of the World even reported at the time that the couple would cut themselves together to ease the pain of withdrawal from drugs.

Blake was imprisoned in 2007 after a violent incident involving a pub landlord – which Amy's pals theorise really began her downward spiral.

Speaking on the new documentary, Mitch admitted: "Amy loved him. There's no question about it. And it was an extremely caustic and hopeless relationship, wasn't it? And destructive.

"When I first saw Blake he was all right," he confessed. "Believe me, he was charming. Charm personified – 'It's very nice to meet you, sir'. Sir!

"Where did you find this bloke? He's like an absolute gentleman!" Mitch continued.

"Unfortunately, the proof of the pudding was in the eating," he admitted.

Amy's best friend Naomi Parry chipped in: "Blake then was arrested and put in prison, and [Amy] went into a really deep decline."

Mitch and Blake haven't had the closest relationship since Amy's death in 2011 – in December 2018, Blake appeared on Good Morning Britain to protest against Mitch's intention to stage a hologram concert of the late Rehab singer.

Speaking on the programme, Blake said: "The way I feel about the actual hologram itself – it's no different to watching a video clip or listening to her music.

"I object to every sort of opportunity that's been made, it seems since Amy passed away seven years ago there's been three films, a hologram tour, to me I can't see many other reasons for this tour."

Proceeds from the tour were going to the Amy Winehouse Foundation, said a statement from Amy's family – and host Piers Morgan was quick to point out that Blake, too, had sold Amy's story to the press after her death.

However, Mitch wasn't ready to abandon his former son-in-law completely after Amy's passing.

In 2012, Blake fell into a coma when his organs began to fail after a drink and drug binge.

At the time, Mitch tweeted: "Terrible news about Blake. Remember Amy loved him. Let's pray for his recovery."

Reclaiming Amy airs on BBC Two at 9pm on Friday, June 23.
