Hollywood legend Sir Sidney Poitier dies aged 94 as tributes pour in for actor

Hollywood legend Sir Sidney Poitier has died aged 94.

His death was confirmed by Minister of Foreign Affairs Fred Mitchell.

Fans have taken to social media to remember the film director and activist.

Taking to Twitter, one fan penned: "RIP. Sir Sidney Poitier. That guy was a great actor."

Another added: "Rest in Power. Thank you for so many iconic performances, for your integrity and for your compassion."

A third person posted: "Sidney Poitier was, for many decades, one of the only Black actors to get affirming, lead roles in Hollywood films.

"The pressure on his shoulders—to be Black but not 'too' Black, to represent Blackness but remain palatable to racist white audiences—was enormous."

While a fourth social media user said: "RIP Sidney Poitier May your legacy live on"

Bahamian-American actor Sidney was an Oscar-winning Hollywood star with over 50 movie appearances.

A Broadway play about the incredible career of the visionary actor was announced just weeks before his tragic death.

His cause of death is yet to be confirmed.
