Illenium, The Lumineers most popular Denver music, bands on Spotify
As Spotify grows, so does the number of people listening to Denver music.
That’s one takeaway from a new report issued by the streaming music service, which has about 300 million users — up nearly 50 million from this time last year. Even before the pandemic, Spotify billed itself as the world’s largest streaming music service.
The report, compiled at The Denver Post’s request, listed the Top 10 most-listened-to artists on the platform who identify as being from the Mile High City. Spotify declined to provide specific totals for each artist.
“We don’t know the origin city for all artists, but these are the top artists for which we know that their origin city is Denver,” said a company spokeswoman.
EDM star Illenium, who often enjoys sold-out Red Rocks runs each summer, topped the list — even though mastermind Nicholas Miller was born in Chicago and raised in San Francisco.
“Miller was just another fan in the crowd,” Billboard wrote in its 2016 Illenium profile. “Everything changed, however, when he saw Bassnectar perform at Red Rocks in the summer of 2012.”
That’s because Miller was a student at the University of Denver at the time studying music recording. He still lives in Denver, a perch from which he’s remixed or collaborated with artists such as Lana Del Rey and The Chainsmokers. Given his remixes and connections, it’s natural that Illenium’s name would top any list of most-streamed Colorado artists.
The rest of the list, however, betrays a fondness for Denver’s singer-songwriter and pop-rock acts, with nationally charting names such as The Lumineers, Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, The Fray and Said the Sky (admittedly, another EDM DJ) rounding out the top five.
The list contrasts with Spotify’s overall most-listened-to artists, which is dominated by pop and hip-hop. As of last week, the Top 10 most overall listened-to artists on the service were Juice WRLD (No. 1), followed by Taylor Swift, Drake, Post Malone and The Weeknd.
Spotify also has created a Denver-localized playlist “highlighting the distinctive listening of the area,” the spokeswoman said. The 10-song, nearly eight-hour playlist — “The Sound of Denver” — is updated automatically weekly to reflect new releases and trending songs.
That list draws from an everynoise.com site (run by Spotify’s resident “genre taxonimist,” Gleen McDonald) that compiles bands and genres by algorithm based on location and style.
