Zayn’s One Direction exit on March 25, 2015 was a huge shock to the band and their fans. The star left the group in the middle of a world tour and returned to England overnight. At the time the star gave a statement claiming he wanted to live a “normal” 22-year-old life. None of the band members have spoken too much about the time in which Zayn left, but Liam opened up in 2019 on how he felt about his friend leaving.

Speaking to GQ, Liam confessed: “I didn’t want him to feel like he was going through this all alone in some ways, or that we were all out to get him.

“We’re the only people who know what you’re going through. The only five people who know what you are going through were all in a room together once, and you left.

“Fair enough – but you don’t want anyone going through such evils for no reason.”

The star also touched upon the relationship he now has with Zayn.

Liam said: “It got to a point with me where I wouldn’t know where to begin with Zayn.

“I hope he has good people around him, but I don’t, at this stage, think it’s anything the rest of us can solve.”

Liam added: “I think with Zayn’s particular exit and the way he chose to go, we haven’t really heard from him since he left.

“He didn’t even say goodbye if I am being honest. It was a really sordid scenario, from our side certainly. A bit strange. It’s difficult.”

Despite not saying goodbye, Liam did praise the star’s solo career.

Zayn released his first album on March 25, 2016 – exactly one year after he quit One Direction.

While the release date of the album may have been a sly jab at his former band, his sales numbers were no joke.

His debut album, Mind of Mine, debuted at number one on both the UK and US album charts.

Zayn also claimed a number one spot with his first single, Pillowtalk.

Despite his commercial success, Liam went on to say he felt Zayn might miss some aspects of 1D.

He said: “His streaming numbers are ridiculous, but I do think he misses out on the performance side a bit, you know. He can’t seem to get past that part.”

At the moment it is not clear what state Liam and Zayn’s relationship is in.

After he left the band, Zayn told GQ that he “didn’t make any friends” while in the band.

He added: “I just didn’t do it. It’s not something that I’m afraid to say. I definitely have issues trusting people.”

Rumours have been rife over the past year, however, that a full One Direction reunion is just around the corner.

The latest odds from Ladbrokes give the band an impressive 1/4 to reunite this year.

Jessica O’Reilly of the bookies’ firm said: “It looks like One Direction fans will finally get their wish this year and the boys will be back on stage together.”
