The repeat episode of the ITV quiz show The Chase saw four stars of Coronation Street take on Shaun Wallace to try to win money for their charities. Host Bradley Walsh, 61, hit out at Shelley King after she didn’t select an answer within the allowed timeframe. He sarcastically remarked: “Good start” to the 65-year-old actress, who plays Yasmeen Nazir on the ITV soap.
Shelley was the first contestant to play, and managed to bag £6,000 in her cash builder round.
For her first question against Chaser Shaun, Bradley asked: “Which of these was the name of a character in a US TV series?”
The options were Dalton Walton, Grady Brady and Luke Duke.
Shelley hesitated as Bradley said: “Need an answer, now!”
Moments later, time had run out. “You’re out of time,” he added.
The audience booed as Shelley appeared disappointed. Bradley quipped: “Good start that Shelley, well played.”
He asked: “Okay, what would you have put?” Shelley replied: “B, I was going for.”
Bradley laughed: “You were going to put B, Grady Brady?”
He added: “Right, the correct answer is Luke Duke.”
“Oh no,” Shelley said. “Am I nearly off now then?” Chaser Shaun chimed in to say: “Don’t worry, two more questions – then you will be.”
But Shelley managed to improve her performance, going on to secure the £6,000 for her charity before re-joining her team.
Next to play was Daniel Brocklebank, who plays Billy Mayhew in the soap.
He also managed to return to the team, bringing £5,000.
Kym Marsh was third, and brought the team’s total up to £17,000 after securing another £6,000.
This left just Jack P. Shepherd, who has played David Platt on the cobbles for 21 years.
The 33-year-old won £3,000 during the cash builder, and chose to play for the amount while facing Shaun.
Shaun quipped: “I’m going to do to you what The Beast did to you in 2012 and knock you out.”
Daniel advised him to go with the £3,000, noting: “If you win the £3,000 it would take us to £20,000 so that’s £5,000 for each of our charities.”
Jack managed to avoid being caught by the Chaser and re-joined his teammates, meaning there would be a full house in the Final Chase.
After a tense round, the team eventually beat Shaun at just 11 of the 20 questions.
The Chase airs weekdays at 4pm on ITV.
