Buy a Scottish coastal tower with swimming pool and boathouse for £1.1 million

If there’s one thing we’ve learned over the last few months, it’s that there’s so much natural beauty right on our doorsteps.

This property is especially interesting in that the stunning Scottish seaside is, quite literally, on the doorstep, with views of small islands in the distance.

It also has its own seawater pool for ‘wild’ swimming without the danger of getting swept away – and did we mention it’s a tower built by a Laird?

The £1.1 million four bedroom home is located in Auchencairn in Dumfries and Galloway, around a 30 minute drive to Dumfries itself.

Balcary Tower was initially built in 1860 by Colonel Johnstone, the Laird of Auchencairn House (apparently for his French governess and mistress) before it was extended in the 1960s and again in the 1970s, and mostly recently entirely professionally refurbished in 2012.

It has all the mod cons you’d expect from a 2020 home – from fibre internet to an electronically-controlled hatch in the roof to look out.

But it’s a place that seems particularly suited to people who love the outdoors as much as they love their creature comforts indoors.

As mentioned, you can swim in the sea pool, which the sellers describe as ‘a rock-cut swimming pool which fills naturally with sea water at high tide and has a sluice gate so that water can be changed if required. This offers a unique angle on those that enjoy wild swimming on the doorstep of their own property.’

There’s also a boathouse fitted with running water and electricity, and multiple sheds and workshops so you can get your gardening on (the garden itself has plenty of flowers already planted that you can tend to).

Even the main bathroom is situated so you can sit in the tub and look out onto the Solway Firth and Hestan Island.

Or on balmy nights – as rare as they are in Scotland – sit out on the terrace enjoying the view.

The property is offered with an optional 12 acres of land to the back, which can be used for farming or horses.

When we give up all our tech and forget the ‘need’ to be ten minutes walk to a gym/pub/deli, we’ll be there with bells on.

For now, it might just be staycation material.
