EastEnders fans were left feeling "anxious" during the latest episode as the murderous Gray Atkins grabbed a knife during a fight with Whitney Dean as she dumped him.

Friday's episode saw the fledging couple's romance come crashing down, as Gray (Toby-Alexander Smith) showed his true colours after finding out that Whitney (Shona McGarty) knew about Chelsea's pregnancy before he did.

After calling Gray "pathetic", Whitney informed the killer that they were "over for good", while viewers watched anxiously.

They were even more concerned for Whitney's safety when Gray was later seen grabbing a steak knife from the kitchen table, before Whitney fortunately made a lucky escape.

Posting to Twitter, viewers shared their emotional reactions to the 'creepy' scene.

One viewer wrote: "Can't have just been me anxious watching that Gray and Whitney scene."

Another commented: "Oh Christ! Whitney get out! FUCKING GET OUT! Gray is creeping me out! Whit is [a] kind soul."

A third viewer said: "Watching that end scene, I felt the exact same fear I did right before he killed Chantelle.

"I'm glad Whitney left as quick as she did because if she'd only stayed a few seconds longer, god knows what gray would've done. "

Meanwhile, another said: "I hope Whitney stays firmly away from Gray."

"Oh my god Whitney watch it," another concluded.

Gray certainly has form when it comes to threatening his love interests with knives.

In a harrowing domestic abuse storyline which aired last year, Gray killed his wife Chantelle (Jessica Plummer) by pushing her into an upturned knife in the dishwasher.

The character got away with the murder after convincing everyone that Chantelle had simply slipped and that her death was a tragic accident.

Gray was also responsible for Tina Carter's Albert Square exit, as he strangled her and drove her from Walford in the boot of his car.

EastEnders airs on BBC One.
