Bernice (played by Samantha Giles) was the villager who stumbled across Leanna’s (Mimi Slinger) dead body at the start of the latest edition of Emmerdale. What she was unaware of was her neighbour Meena Jutla (Paige Sandhu) had killed the youngster in Thursday night’s double-bill after the teenager discovered the nurse had murdered her best friend years before. However, with Liam Cavanagh (Johnny McPherson) looking for someone to blame for his daughter’s death, he could point the finger at his former lover as she was the first one to find Leanna’s corpse on the ITV soap.
The quirky character had just agreed to accompany her own daughter Gabby Thomas (Rosie Bentham) to her latest pregnancy scan when she saw Leanna’s body lying in the water under the bridge.
It wasn’t long before the police and the ambulances arrived at the scene, with the rest of the village soon learning of the teenager’s demise.
As well as Liam, Jacob Gallagher (Joe-Warren Plant), David Metcalfe (Matthew Wolfenden) and Leyla Harding (Roxy Shahidi) were heartbroken over the youngster’s death.
Unfortunately, the same couldn’t be said for Meena as she watched the villager’s misery with glee, knowing her killer secrets were going to stay harboured.
But could Liam make Bernice guilty of the crime as he thinks his daughter’s death could be revenge for him marrying Leyla?
In recent weeks, viewers have watched as Bernice returned to the village after a year away to win back Liam after jilting him at the altar.
The GP was planning to marry Leyla, however, and Gabby’s mother did her best to ruin the couple’s big day and claim her former lover for herself.
Unfortunately for her, the plan fell through and ever since she has been trying to get her life back on track.
It could be a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time for the quirky character as Liam could be sure she killed his daughter.
The police would arrest Bernice having listened to Liam’s explanation as to how she could be involved in Leanna’s demise.
All happened in such a blur
As the evidence stacks up against her, Bernice could be found guilty of murder as Meena gets away with her heinous crime.
In Friday night’s episode, Bernice was genuinely heartbroken over Leanna’s death but the rest of the village could see it as an act.
Sat in the Woolpack pub, the quirky character had to explain to Gabby why she missed her scan, which revealed the youngster was having a boy.
“I was so excited after talking to you. I was just standing on the bridge, taking in the air and then I looked down and she was there, lying in the water below.
“I rushed to be with her but she was so still, so pale. I knew it was too late and there was nothing I could do.”
Kim Tate (Claire King), who was also sat in the pub, said: “I’m sure the police will be trying to establish exactly what happened.”
“So, you think someone could’ve done this on purpose?” a distraught Gabby asked, before enquiring if Leanna looked liked she’d been attacked.
“I don’t know, it all happened in such a blur,” Bernice added, making it seem as if she could be lying to someone who was suspicious about her.
Liam’s former lover seemed more concerned about how he was feeling, having lost his one and only daughter.
The GP was seen at home talking to Leyla about how he was feeling, telling her he needed to know who killed his daughter.
“If it wasn’t an accident, then how did she get there?” the emotional medical professional asked, venting his fury.
“Dare to think how awful her last moments might’ve been? Alone, trying to call out. She needed me and I let her down.
“I’ve got to be able to think straight. I don’t want any comfort or sympathy or meaningless words,” the GP told his wife.
“I want my daughter back. If someone did this to her…someone took her from me. Someone took my beautiful girl.”
Will Liam really get Bernice arrested for the murder as he tried to get justice for his young daughter?
The actress who played Leanne, Mimi, has spoken out on her character’s exit from the show, saying: “I am glad that the secret is out – I knew back in December that Leanna would meet an untimely death but I wasn’t told any other details until just before the scripts were published.
“It has been hard not to let on to anyone. I am sad to be leaving the Emmerdale family on one hand but so excited by what may be in store in the future.
“I am so excited by the storyline and the opportunity that I have been given to bring some drama to the Dales.”
The soap star added: “I had taken the decision to leave the Dales and I was so looking forward to hearing how the producers were going to engineer my exit.
“When Jane Hudson told me about my storyline, I have to say that I was shocked but so excited to be given the opportunity to be challenged and show my acting abilities.”
Emmerdale continues Monday at 7pm on ITV.
