Ghosts season three came to an end in the summer but there is no need to worry as it has already been confirmed there will be a fourth series. The BBC sitcom has proved to be a hit with viewers and now it will be returning for a festive episode. To celebrate this festive time of year, a special guest star is going to be popping in to make an appearance.

Who is joining the Ghosts Christmas special cast?

The entirety of the main cast will be back for the Christmas special which airs tonight, Thursday, December 23, at 8.30pm on BBC One.

Returning as the owners of Button House are Alison (played by Charlotte Ritchie) and Mike (Kiell Smith-Bynoe).

Joining them for the episode will be the Horrible Histories alumni Mathew Baynton as Thomas Thorne, Ben Willbond as the Captain and Sex Education star Jim Howick as Pat Butcher.

Not Going Out actress Katy Wix is Mary, Miracle Workers star Lolly Adefope as Kitty and fellow Horrible Histories stars Laurence Rickard as Robin/Humphrey’s Head and Simon Farnaby as MP Julian Fawcett.

As well as the usual cast, comedy actress and one half of the famous duo French and Saunders, Jennifer Saunders, will be in the Christmas special.

She is also well known for portraying Edina in the comedy Absolutely Fabulous with Joanna Lumley as Patsy Stone.

Last year, Saunders went down the more serious route as Heidi Doyle in Netflix drama The Stranger.

However, she will be returning to her love of comedy with Ghosts, portraying none other than Lady Button’s (Martha Howe-Douglas) mother Lavinia.

Speaking to presenter Olly Smith on his podcast A Glass With… about Saunders’ guest appearance, actress Howe-Douglas said: “We wrote the part for her.

“We wrote it with her in mind, but kind of going ‘would she do it?’… she’s been very supportive of us on t’internet.

“She was just so kind when she came in, about the show, and I said to her ‘thank you so much, Jennifer, for doing this’ and she was like ‘Well how could I not? It’s just about the best thing on television.’ I was like ‘[gasp] I used to watch you as a child!’

“You know sometimes don’t meet your heroes – mention no names – but, yeah, she was no disappointment to me.”

“Her kind of depiction of what Fanny’s mum would be like had elements of Fanny Button in it.

“It’s such a strange thing to have your comedy hero do a little bit of what you do, but in their own incredible way.”

Few details have been released regarding how and why Lady Button’s mum suddenly appears so fans are just going to have to wait for the episode itself.

However, the official synopsis has given away a few hints at another upcoming plot line in the Christmas special.

The description reads: “Kitty becomes convinced that Santa has made an early stop at Button House when Mike and Alison discover a man living in a tent on their grounds.

“The ghosts’ advice on how to deal with him leaves much to be desired, but eventually Mike and Alison learn that they have more to offer this Christmas than they realised.”

But who is this intruder and are they going to be a threat to Alison, Mike and the spirits?

The Ghosts Christmas special will air on Thursday, December 23, at 8.30pm on BBC One.
