After Susanna Reid revealed she had “night terrors” in an interview with Stella magazine at the weekend, her Good Morning Britain co-host Piers Morgan explained he too struggled with his sleep as they reported on the coronavirus pandemic. Both Susanna and Piers presented the ITV show as the first nationwide lockdown took place in the middle of March.

Susanna explained: “I did find them quite distressing and having a sense of powerlessness that I couldn’t help.

“We were here reporting during the pandemic and the stories were overwhelming upsetting in the most part, because we were dealing with so much bad news.

“It was affecting so many people.”

Piers added he would get very little sleep, often only resting for “four or five hours” a day.

“I would normally go back [home] and try and have a bit of sleep, and I couldn’t during that whole period,” he detailed.

“I remember gained whole days just living off four or five hours max a night for months on end.

“We weren’t alone. People were having a much tougher time than we were.”

“That was the thing, this isn’t about me personally being affected, although of course, our team has been affected and we were all very concerned about that,” Susanna chipped in.

“It was just that overwhelming sense that we were in the grip of something that was very frightening.

“All we could do was present the news to you.”

Meanwhile, talking about her interview with the Telegraph at the weekend, Susanna joked Piers was the cause of her nightmares.

“Susanna, lovely cover of Stella magazine in the Telegraph,” Piers remarked.

“Very striking photographs and I sort of slightly ambiguous interview.

“You talk about these nights you’ve had where you’ve had nightmares.”

After reading out Susanna’s quotes, Piers teased: “Was that when I joined the show?”

“Yes, they started in 2015 and they haven’t stopped,” Susanna hit back.

Elsewhere on the show, Piers admitted to making a “schoolboy error” when he tried to close his suit jacket.

One eagle-eyed viewer tweeted the host: “Enjoying the show Piers, but have to say your jacket was stretched when you just tried to do the centre button up.”

Piers laughed: “Yes, schoolboy error. Never do something on TV without knowing how it will play out.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV at 6am.
