The Archbishop had previously admitted to being concerned about the “us first” rhetoric some people across the UK have adopted since the coronavirus vaccine was green-lit for distribution. Mr Welby insisted the UK should make plans to share any additional dose of the jab with other countries struggling with the pandemic. He also insisted Boris Johnson has been “working his socks off” to ensure the country recovers quickly from the crisis.

The Archbishop of Canterbury told Good Morning Britain: “I think one of the things about this vaccine…the ethical and the self-interest actually come together on this.

“As we’ve seen with the South African variant, and unless we deal with it everywhere as we all keep saying, we won’t deal with it anywhere.

“It’s to our advantage that everyone in the world gets a vaccination that is effective. But it’s also the right thing to do.”

He continued: “If you’re on a sinking ship, you don’t try to hog a lifeboat to yourself to be more comfortable, you get more people in as you can. But you’re in the lifeboat.”
