Is Colin in Black and White based on a true story?

In short, yes, Colin in Black and White is a true story as it is a dramatisation of former NFL star Colin Kaepernick’s younger years.

Sports fans will best know him for playing six seasons for the San Francisco 49ers as a quarterback.

But others will also know Kaepernick as an American civil rights activist who caused quite a commotion when he started a silent protest during a game’s national anthem.

He began the idea of kneeling before a game starts as an act against ongoing racism in the States.

However, Colin in Black and White isn’t about his career but Kaepernick’s adolescence.

The drama sees how the mixed-race ex-quarterback was adopted by a white family at the age of four, moving him from Wisconsin to Turlock, Calif.

Colin in Black and White is going to show how he came to terms with his race and how he overcame the prejudices he was faced with when he wanted to play football.

Fans may even recognise the youngster who is portraying Kaepernick.

Actor Jaden Michael is going to star as the younger version of Kaepernick during his high school years.

Despite being in the early days in his career, Michael has already starred in a plethora of films and shows.

Some of which include Wonderstruck, Vampires vs The Bronx, Growing Up and Other Lies, What Would You Do? and The Bug Diaries.

Kaepernick himself will also be featured in his series, providing on-screen commentary as well as off-screen narration.

He co-created the series alongside Emmy Award-winning director Ava DuVernay.

She has been responsible for other race-central shows and films such as 13th, When They See Us and Selma.

DuVernay at first questioned Kaepernick on the idea of leaving the story with his teenage years.

But in response to this, he told The Times that high school is the period in our lives where everyone is trying to figure out who they are and where they fit in.

“It allowed us to dive into the complex racial dynamics of my family, my relationships and society.”

Kaepernick added: “Too often we see race and Black stories portrayed through a white lens.

“We seek to give new perspective to the differing realities that Black people face.

“We explore the racial conflicts I faced as an adopted Black man in a white community, during my high school years.

“It’s an honour to bring these stories to life in collaboration with Ava for the world to see.”

Colin in Black and White will be out from Friday, October 29, on Netflix.
