Dedicated viewers of the NBC hit SVU have been hoping for a romance between former partners Olivia Benson (played by Mariska Hargitay) and Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) for over 20 years. Ever since their emotional reunion in season 22 of SVU, there has been discussion amongst the fandom about whether Bernadette Stabler (Burstyn) is returning to console her son after a painful breakup with Benson and to deal with the fallout of her daughter-in-law’s death.

Viewers were ecstatic when it was announced recently former SVU guest star Burstyn would be returning to the world of Law and Order as Stabler’s mum Bernadette.

The legendary actress won an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Star for her emotional performance and her appearance was a hit with fans when she appeared in season 10 of SVU.

However, why is Bernadette returning to Organized Crime and what could this mean for Stabler?

Bernadette first made an appearance on SVU after Stabler’s daughter Kathleen began acting out.

Kathleen was arrested for drunk driving and for stealing, which forced the detective to confront his mother about his past.

Bernadette was introduced to help with her granddaughter but it was clear the two had a troubled relationship.

After helping Stabler during a particularly difficult time on SVU, could his mother be returning to, once again, console him after his breakup with Benson?

Stabler will find it difficult to see Bernadette again as the two have long been estranged after it was revealed the latter suffered from Bipolar Disorder and once tried to murder her son during a manic episode.

Burstyn’s character maintained contact with her grandchildren and was later able to identify Kathleen was also bipolar like her.

She later convinced her granddaughter to get help for her illness, which led to the charges against her being dropped.

Stabler has had a horrific time on SVU recently as his return coincided with his wife Kathy’s (Isabel Gillies) death.

With the detective still grieving for his wife and feeling guilty about not saving her in time, a romance with Benson was always going to be hard.

Fans have been teased with their romance since the beginning but will the pair be able to handle the emotional weight surrounding their relationship?

Bernadette’s reappearance certainly suggests not all is well and Stabler will need her now more than ever.

If Stabler were to lose his closest friend Benson after Kathy’s death, this could push the character over the edge and an intervention by his mother may be inevitable.

Benson and Stabler’s children attempted an intervention once already on Organized Crime after they were concerned that the cop wasn’t grieving properly for his wife and throwing himself into his work as a way to deal with the pain.

Stabler promised to get help once he captured crime boss Richard Wheatley (Dylan McDermott), who is responsible for Kathy’s death.

But with his wife’s murderer still out there, is Bernadette the only one who can stop Stabler from going down a dark path?

While Bernadette’s reasons for returning remain a secret for now, fans will surely be excited to see Burstyn return to the small screen.

One fan on Twitter could barely contain their excitement about her return, writing: “I love this! Mama Stabler was one of my favourite guest stars!”

Law and Order: SVU and Law and Order: Organized Crime are both available to watch on NBC in the USA. Season 22 of SVU and season 1 of Organized Crime are currently airing in the UK on Sky Witness and Now TV.
