Tom Ellis is best known for playing the crime-solving devil Lucifer Morningstar over five seasons of the hugely successful Fox and Netflix series. In the latest instalment, the Welsh leading man took on a completely new role as Lucifer’s devious brother Michael, which he admitted left him feeling a bit of a fraud.

Lucifer’s lead star Tom Ellis has recalled the toughest part of stepping into a whole other role for the fifth season of Netflix’s popular urban fantasy.

After four seasons portraying the debonair devil, Lucifer Morningstar, Ellis faced off against himself as the devil’s scheming twin brother, Michael.

Ellis was made to step out of his comfort zone for his demanding dual role in the series’ blockbuster fifth season.

Not only did he portray Lucifer’s most nefarious foe to date, Ellis was faced with the additional challenge of impersonating the devil whilst still in character as Michael.

During a recent Q&A with StageIt.com, the TV star detailed the strange process of getting into character as the feuding twin angels.

He recalled: “Getting into character as Michael in the first instance was weird, because I really enjoyed it.

“But at the same time, I hadn’t felt that way on this set for a long time, in that I was living in new territory for me as a character.”

While the Welsh actor has landed the occasional appearance outside of the long-running fantasy drama, Lucifer remains his most prominent role to date.

Despite spending much of season five playing a version of Lucifer through the lens of his twin brother, this was one of the first times he has stepped into a different character’s shoes since the series began in 2016.

The actor then confessed he didn’t have the same comfort level while portraying another character impersonating his usual persona.

He continued: “Because I played Lucifer for such a long time, it’s just like, flicking a switch now, almost.

“And Michael wasn’t. So I really had to think about that. And so that was the challenge.”

Tom Ellis also began to second guess his abilities on the set of Lucifer season five.

He revealed that the process was made especially strange by having to perform his new role in front of the show’s regular cast and crew.

Ellis explained: “I had to sort of get through the initial kind of feelings of ‘God, I feel like a massive fraud’ and really trust in the choices that I’d made and just go for it.

“So yeah, it was a bit of challenge, but ultimately, one that I relished.”

Thankfully, the extra work paid off and his performance in Lucifer’s fifth season is widely regarded as his best turn as the dashing devil to date.

Meanwhile, fans are eagerly awaiting to see if Tom Ellis will be reprising his role as Michael in the as yet unreleased second half of season five, and the show’s show stopping final season.

Filming is currently winding down on season six in Los Angeles, so Netflix subscribers could expect to see an announcement for the show’s return very soon.

Lucifer Season 5, Part 1 is available to stream on Netflix.
