Mel Sykes left ‘gutted’ after splitting from Steve Coogan over fears he didn’t want to settle down – The Sun
TV BEAUTY Melanie Sykes has split from Steve Coogan – after growing concerned the Alan Partridge star did not want to settle down.
Model and presenter Mel, 49, is said to be “gutted but not surprised” by the end of their romance which began after they met at a glitzy film premiere.
We told in February how Mel and Steve, 54 – famed for Alan Partridge catchphrases ‘A-Ha’ and ‘Back of the Net’ – had started secretly dating after Mel spent a weekend at the comic’s country home.
But mum-of-two Mel, who shot to fame in the Boddingtons TV ads, has now called time on the relationship over her fears he would not commit.
A source said: “Mel is gutted it didn’t work out – but although she is disappointed, she is not that surprised.
“She was worried that he wasn’t committing and wasn’t keen on family stuff or getting too involved with her two teenage sons.
“She had a great time but also feared he might be more interested in staying single and acting like a playboy in the long-term.
“She found some of his behaviour a bit selfish, and like a bloke who was used to being on his own and a bit set in his ways.
“They were together properly for at least six months, after a period of wooing.
“So they were close, but it never got too serious.
“I think it was Mel who finally ended things, and there are no hard feelings on either side.”
The Sun on Sunday revealed how Melanie and Steve started dating after hitting it off at the launch party for film Stan &Ollie in Soho, London.
Mel was seen at the January launch smiling and leaning a hand on Steve, who won plaudits for his portrayal as Stan Laurel in the movie.
TV and radio star Mel then spent time at Steve’s secluded country home in Sussex – and the pair continued their romance away from the gaze of the cameras.
A source told us at the time: “Mel was won over by his charm – and she has said Steve is a heck of a lot more suave and charming than his Alan Partridge character.
“She found him charming and, of course, really funny.”
Mel was married to actor Daniel Caltagirone from 2001 to 2009, and the couple have two teenage sons who split their time between them.
She was also wed to Jack Cockings in 2013 and previously dated golfer Martin Kaymer, 34 and singer Olly Murs, 35.
Steve has previously been linked to Canadian model Jacqui de Padoin Goodman, who is 26 years his junior.
He was married to Caroline Hickman from 2002 to 2005, and he has a daughter from a four-year relationship with solicitor Anna Cole.
The comic’s exes are also said to include US singer Courtney Love and actress Daisy Lewis.
A spokeswoman for Mel declined to comment.
