Long-running NCIS regular Pauley Perrette decided to say goodbye to her wildly popular character Abby Sciuto after 15 long seasons on the CBS drama. Over three years later, one particularly loose thread from her final episodes still hasn’t been tied up.
Ellie Bishop (played by Emily Wickersham) and Jimmy Palmer’s (Brian Dietzen) antics in Abby Sciuto’s lab in NCIS season 15 has left a gaping plot hole in the popular action series.
In the 18th episode of the 2017-18 season, the team are forced to solve a crime from the inside when NCIS HQ goes on lockdown.
This episode would be one of the last appearances from Perrette’s upbeat Goth and forensic scientist Abby Sciuto, as she would leave in episode 22, ‘Two Steps Back’.
Unfortunately, her exit wasn’t as smooth as she may have liked as the NCIS lockdown forced Bishop and Palmer to blow a hole in her high-tech lab.
The task force’s new agent and resident doctor prepared to face the wrath of Abby once she inevitably discovered her equipment had been destroyed.
However, one fan has been revisiting some of the show’s classic episodes, and took to Reddit when they realised this disaster was never resolved.
User Bootlebat posted: “So, in ‘Death From Above’ Bishop and Palmer accidentally blow up Abby’s mass spectrometer when trying to escape, and are terrified she will find out.
“At the end of the following episode she seems to be on the verge of doing so.”
Towards the end of episode 15×19, ‘The Numerical Limit’, Bishop has still not ‘fessed up to what actually happened to Abby’s Mass Spec.
All the pieces seemed to be in place for a furious confrontation when Abby finally sniffed out the truth in the following episodes.
However, when they tuned in expecting to see Bishop in the hot seat, fans were baffled when the series apparently dropped the storyline altogether.
“Then the whole thing is seemingly forgotten about,” the Reddit post continued.
“[Abby] leaves in ‘Two Steps Back’, seemingly without [Abby] ever finding out about it.

“So, why was this whole plot point just dropped for no apparent reason?”
Abby’s tenure on the show sadly wrapped up without the chance to resolve one of her last storylines.
Either she discovered the truth off-screen and left the office with a huge chip on her shoulder, or Bishop got away with the mishap scot free and never told Abby the truth.
Both resolutions would be completely out of character, as Abby was far too smart not to sniff out the truth, and Bishop would have eventually done the right thing and owned up to her mistake.
While some fans are still scratching their heads over this missing plot thread years later, others have reminded them not to take it too seriously.
One NCIS fan replied: “I haven’t watched it but I’d say it’s just another way of ending an episode with a bit of comedy.
“They just make it so that the audience gets to think about how Abby inflicted her rage between episodes.”
While it would have been fun to imagine Abby finally losing her cool with an unsuspecting Agent Bishop, fans agreed they would have preferred to see the confrontation play out in the actual episode.
Thankfully, the series has overcome its occasional shortcomings, and NCIS and its two spin-offs, NCIS: Los Angeles and NCIS: Hawaii, are still all on their way later this year.
NCIS season 19 will premiere Monday, September 20 on CBS.
