The National Television Awards ran into a small hiccup as a technical glitch caused a delay while The Great British Bake Off winners stood on stage unsure of what to do on Thursday night.

Bake Off won the prize for Best Challenge Show, last year's champion Peter Sawkins took to the stage to accept the award alongside his fellow contestants.

After thanking viewers and the crew for helping the show go forward throughout lockdown, what should have been a quick handover to the Bake Off judges in the tent via video link became an awkward silence.

Peter said: "I think we're now going to pass over to the big four who should be in the tent and say something,"

As he turned expecting to see judges Paul Hollywood and Pru Leith along with hosts Noel Fielding and Matt Lucas on a big screen, nothing seemed to happen.

The other winners all stood quietly in wait for the video to play before host Joel Dommett quickly stepped in to say: "We're going to go live to the Bake Off tent now… go!"

To the relief of all on stage, the video finally played as it cut to the others in the tent ready to thank viewers for their support of the show.

Fans jumped online to celebrate the victory for Bake off, with one saying: “I actually can’t wait for #BakeOff to come back #NTAs.”

Another said: “Super thrilled for The Great British Bake Off!!!! Congratulations on winning the award for Challenge Show!!!! #NTAs.”

The win follows the recent news that Bake Off will be returning later this month.

The show’s official Instagram account posted a snap of the hit Channel 4 baking show featuring the hosts and judges holding mugs that read “Bake Off is back."

2018 contestant Ruby Bhogal joked in the comments: "OH FINE I’ll stay in on Tuesday nights for the foreseeable and binge on cakes and drool at my tv if you insist. Ugh, the worst."

Fellow 2018 star Kim-Joy exclaimed: "YEEEESSSS FUTURE BAKERS! Ccannot wait to watch woohooo!!! xxx."
