Outlander season six is set for release in early 2022 on Starz. The new season has been a long time coming for fans, with various delays caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Thankfully, the sixth season recently released its first trailer, exciting fans for what’s in store. Yet, many viewers have been saddened by the news there will only be eight episodes in season six.

Why does season 6 only have 8 episodes?

When season six was first confirmed by Starz, it also came with the announcement that season seven was in development.

Both seasons will be created back-to-back, helping the showrunners catch up to the show’s original schedule.

However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, filming was significantly more difficult on season six, leading to some sacrifices being made.

As a result, there will only be eight episodes this time around, far shorter than the usual 12-13 episodes in previous seasons.

The main reason for this has been to get new episodes out faster for fans, with a much shorter wait for the seventh, and significantly longer season.

Season seven will consist of 16 episodes, balancing out the reduced sixth season.

In a statement on the situation with Outlander, showrunner Matthew B Roberts said: “Filming in 2021 has presented an unprecedented set of challenges which led us to the decision to truncate the season in order to bring the fans the most vibrant and dynamic season as soon as possible.

“Dinna fash, we will then film an extended season seven with 16 episodes next year as life returns to normalcy.”

This means that production will commence soon on season seven, though Starz has not released an official date.

In turn, no release date for season seven has been confirmed as well, with season six expected for early 2022.

As there are no release dates for either season, it is believed season six could arrive around February, while seven could premiere in late 2022 or early 2023.

The sixth season is based on Diana Gabaldon’s sixth book, A Breath of Snow and Ashes, while season seven will adapt book seven – Echo in the Bone.

The ongoing story between the two seasons will see the character face the American Revolutionary War.

This has already been teased in the first trailer for season six, with British Redcoats marching into Fraser’s Ridge.

Season six will show the years building up to the war, while season seven will throw the characters straight into it.

The gap between seasons five and six has lasted so long, that fans have taken to calling it Droughtlander.

Clearly, Roberts and Starz are keen for this to not happen again, especially as the series is catching up to Gabaldon’s novels.

The ninth book in the series, Go Tell the Bees That I am Gone, will release on November 23.

Book 10 is also in the works, meaning there is still plenty of Outlander to come, both on the page and the screen.

Outlander season six will premiere in early 2022 on Stars in the USA. The UK release date for the season has not yet been confirmed.
