Shameless season 11: Will Fiona Gallagher return for the last season of Shameless?

Shameless: Gallagher family returns in hilarious tenth series

Shameless season 11 marks the final outing of the long-running comedy series – based on the Channel 4 British series of the same name. American network Showtime will be airing the series from December 6. Many fans are wondering if Emmy Rossum will be reprising her role as Fiona Gallagher for the last outing – has what you need to know.

Will Fiona Gallagher return for the last season of Shameless?

British actress Rossum bowed out of Shameless back in 2018 after she announced Fiona Gallagher was no more.

She was part of Shameless from its launch in 2011 and served as a matriarch figure to the unruly Gallagher brood.

At the time, she posted a lengthy Facebook statement in which she explained her decision for stepping down from the comedy series.

She wrote how the role had been a “gift” and as an only child Shameless had allowed to become “ensconced in that messy Gallagher family love” – something she’d always “dreamed of”.

Rossum went on to hail her co-stars, whom she likened to members of her own family.

However, towards the end of the post, she seemed to suggest she was ready to leave after working on the show for so many years.

She wrote: “Malcolm Gladwell says it takes 10,000 hours to become truly good at something. To become world class.

“Well by my calculation, 100 episodes, seven days per episode (plus Chicago weeks), 12 hour days, we’re just at about 10,000 hours.

“So I guess we’re finally good at this. I can say for certain that this cast and crew, who I’ve been have truly honored [sic] to work alongside, are world class. I am proud and I’m filled with gratitude.”

She went on to say: “I know you will continue on without me, for now. There is much more Gallagher story to be told. I will always be rooting for my family.

“Try not to think of me as gone, just think of me as moving down the block.”

There’s been not much news since then but in January this year, Showtime executive Gary Levine addressed whether the star could be back.

Levine suggested it was “too early” to say then but this may have now changed.

He went on to say to Deadline: “She would be welcomed with open arms but Emmy doesn’t owe us anything.

“She did great for the show as the show did great for her, and it was a very amicable parting.”

Levine added: “So if she surprises us, it would be lovely.”

Since then, there hasn’t been much word on whether Rossum would be coming back to the fold for old time’s sake.

Perhaps fans of Shameless will be in for a surprise with the character unexpectedly turning up.

Showtime announced in early 2020 its plans to bring Shameless to a close with the writers promising a natural conclusion of sorts.

The show has consistently performed well for the network over the past decade, but Levine said it was now time to end Shameless.

There will be 12 episodes in season 11 which will be airing on the channel weekly.

Season 11 will tie up all the loose ends with the Gallaghers just as brash as ever.
