Shirley Ballas denies Carrie Symonds is joining Strictly as she teases line-up

Shirley Ballas has broken her silence on the rumours that Boris Johnson's fiancée Carrie Symonds would be joining Strictly Come Dancing later this year.

The politician's other half had been reported to be high on the wish list for BBC bosses, with her making headlines related to the £200,000 Downing Street flat refurbishment.

But professional dancer and Strictly judge Shirley has thrown water on the flames, saying it's absolutely not happening.

She made an appearance on This Morning on Tuesday, with Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby pushing her for an answer on the new line-up of celebrities.

And speaking directly about Carrie, Shirley got up, did a dance and said: "With a boom, boom, boom and a shimmy… no, 99.99999%. It's a family show, it's not a political agenda."

Of course, Shirley refused to actually reveal who would be Waltzing their way onto the Strictly ballroom floor later this year – but did confess things were happening behind the scenes.

"They're already starting to get the celebs ready, and the pros have been announced," she teased.

Shirley added: "It's outstanding. Everything [show runner] Sarah James does is outstanding, so I think you'll be mesmerised, surprised and intrigued."

It has been confirmed that all of the pros who danced on last year's series will return, though it's not yet clear who will be given a celebrity partner.

That means Anton du Beke, Luba Mushtuk, Katya Jones, Dianne Buswell, Johannes Radebe, Aljaz Skorjanec, Amy Dowden, Giovanni Pernice, Janette Manrara, Karen Hauer, Gorka Marquez and Oti Mabuse will be back.

On top of that, the pros who last year did not receive a partner will return too – Neil Jones, Nadiya Bychkova, Graziano Di Prima and Nancy Xu.

Last year's series was severely affected by the coronavirus pandemic, with the celebrities and professionals having to isolate and bubble up to allow them to dance in such close proximity.

In December's finale, it was announced that comedian Bill Bailey was the winner, alongside his pro partner Oti Mabuse.

It marked the second year in a row that Oti won, as she was crowned the champ alongside soap star Kelvin Fletcher the year before.
