Stranger Things theories: Brenner currently in Russia with Hopper- here’s how

The Duffer Brothers’ ode to the 80s proved a massive hit for streaming giant Netflix. Sadly, the coronavirus outbreak has put a major delay on the production of Stranger Things. In the meantime, devoted viewers have been trying to piece together what’s to come in the next season.

Filming for season four was confirmed to be underway earlier this year, but the COVID-19 pandemic has unfortunately put production on hold.

Alongside the announcement, Netflix released a clip of the cast at the new season’s first table read.

Additionally, an intriguing teaser trailer was dropped on YouTube, confirming the survival of fan favourite character Jim Hopper (played by David Harbour).

Hopper will begin the next season holed up in a Russian labour camp, and fans have been speculating how – and if – he will eventually escape.

Some fans think the former sheriff of Hawkins has been brainwashed and will need rescuing from Stranger Things’ cast of kids, while others suspect Hopper will make a daring escape by himself.

Other fans have suggested his situation could be much worse than it appears, as a particularly sinister theory proposes the return of a major villain.

Reddit user iamgroot721 posted: “I definitely think he is alive, and was convinced he was the American until the recent teaser.”

At the end of season three, two Russian guards refer to an ‘American’ being kept under lock and key in their facility, though this prisoner seems to have been confirmed to be Hopper.

However, this fan is still convinced that Dr Brenner (Matthew Modine), who was attacked by a Demogorgon at the end of the first season, could be keeping Hopper company.

Some viewers still believe Brenner could be out there somewhere, and in season two Ray Carrol attempted to bargain with Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) by claiming the experimental scientist was actually alive.

The fan continued: “I don’t think he would have fled the scene. He has to be in the Upside Down, if he’s alive, right?”

Brenner has since appeared to Eleven in visions, so there’s certainly precedent for Modine to make a return to the role in season four.

While some viewers remain convinced Brenner was mauled to death by the Demogorgon, it’s entirely possible he’s still alive somewhere in the alternate dimension below Hawkins, the Upside Down.

Moreover, now the Russians know the Upside Down exists, it’s possible they’ve taken him prisoner in the Soviet Union in order to extract information from him

Finally, the fan added: “Maybe he gets to Russia through the Upside Down and helps them get the Demogorgon. Maybe Hopper will run into him in Russia.”

As well as referencing an American prisoner, the season three stinger confirms the Russian base is also in possession of its own Demogorgon.

Either the Russians have managed to open up a portal to the Upside Down in their home country, or someone has helped them fetch a Demogorgon from Hawkins.

To add even further credibility to the theory, another Reddit user pointed out the Demogorgon attacking Brenner was itself being shot at by multiple armed guards.

It’s entirely possible the deranged scientist was able to slip away unnoticed to make a surprise return in the upcoming season.

Stranger Things 1-3 are available to stream on Netflix.
