Strictly Come Dancing 2019: James Cracknell drops shock admission as he’s confirmed

The next series of Strictly Come Dancing is not far off and the line-up for this year’s series is currently being revealed.

And, the latest star to be announced was James Cracknell on Good Morning Britain today with hosts Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway teasing their identity in a number of clues.

Viewers had been guessing all morning as to who the next contestant could be with some theorising it could be Tyson Fury, Martin Clunes or weather presenter Laura Tobin.

But in a spectacular reveal it was James who explained they will be taking to the dancefloor later this year.

“I can imagine my mum, I haven’t told my mum yet,” James admitted to hosts Ben and Kate.

“You haven’t told your mum?” Ben exclaimed shocked by the admission.

James went on to add: “Yeah I know what I’m in for and I’ve had some mates who have done it as well.

“It’s going to be really interesting having no confidence and being, ‘Okay, can I do it?’”

Asked about how his estranged wife and kids think about his signing, he revealed they’re “embarrassed” for him.

He explained his eldest child told him he has to incorporate “dad dancing” into one of his routines on the series.

Double Olympic Gold Medallist James said of his signing to the BBC: “I’m really looking forward to being a part of Strictly this year.

“Having spent so many years mucking around in a rowing boat with big men in tight lycra, it’s time I learned a new skill.

“I need to apologise to my kids in advance for the embarrassment.”

Kate probed James on how he felt regarding the Strictly curse with Ben referencing recent reports his estranged wife had not wanted him to take part.

James replied: “She felt for the dancers who would have broken feet.

“It’s more you’re spending so much time with someone and you only have so much time in your day. Apparently I have quite an addictive personality.”

James joins footballer David James, comedian Chris Ramsay and EastEnders star Emma Barton on the line-up.

Also competing on this year’s series are social media star Saffron Barker, actress Catherine Tyldesley, BBC Breakfast’s Mike Bushell, CBBC presenter Karim Zeroual and Viscountess Emma Weymouth.

RuPaul Drag Race’s Michelle Visage, Paralympic champion Will Bayley, Made In Chelsea’s Jamie Laing, footballer and presenter Alex Scott and DJ Dev Griffin will also be hoping to lift the Glitterball Trophy.

Strictly Come Dancing returns to BBC One later this year.
