The Crown’s Emma Corrin 'to return as Princess Diana in series 5'
The Crown’s Emma Corrin is said to be making a return as Princess Diana in series 5 of the Netflix drama despite the role being recast.
According to reports, bosses are trying to find ways for the 24-year-old actress, who has been praised for her ‘perfect and haunting’ portrayal of the late Royal, to feature in the new chapter alongside her replacement Elizabeth Debicki.
‘Under normal circumstances, The Crown’s rule is that the entire cast changes after every two series, but Emma has been exceptional as Di,’ an insider said.
‘So although Elizabeth will take over the role, they’re looking at ways that her predecessor can appear, albeit in flashbacks to her younger years.’
The TV source continued to The Sun: ‘The Crown has made these exceptions in the past, such as the current series where the twenty-something Queen Elizabeth II – played by Claire Foy – makes an appearance in a lengthy flashback.’
The first three series of The Crown also repeated flashbacks to the Queen and Princess Margaret when they were children.
The publication claims producers are hoping Emma will be able to feature in repeated trips through time to Diana’s formative years.
The fourth series of The Crown arrived last week and explores Diana meeting the Prince (Josh O’Connor) as a bashful young girl.
The chapter also shows Diana’s struggle with an eating disorder and growing animosity with her husband, as the Royal family’s involvement in their marriage saw her lose control of her own life.
It’s made worse when Prince Charles returns to his first love, Camilla Parker-Bowles (Emerald Fennell), someone who he had refused to leave behind despite being forced apart when they were younger.
Earlier this year, it was announced Game Of Thrones actor Jonathan Pryce would be replacing Josh O’Connor as Prince Charles in the upcoming fifth series.
He will star opposite Imelda Staunton, who has been named as the show’s next Queen Elizabeth II, replacing Olivia Colman.
Netflix declined to comment.
The Crown is available to stream on Netflix.
