After his shocking departure from The Walking Dead in 2018, audiences were unsatisfied with the anti-hero’s dramatic exit from the show. However, Andrew has spoken out about the future of his character Rick Grimes.

The Walking Dead, based on the Robert Kirkman comic book series of the same name, has dominated television screens since its debut in 2010.

When it was announced the upcoming eleventh season, due in 2022, would be its last, many fans were left wondering what the future will hold for the series’ most popular characters.

The show’s former leader and tortured anti-hero Rick made a shocking exit in 2018 and actor Lincoln has left an indelible mark on the series.

However, Lincoln has given fans hope he could once again return as the former sheriff for its final season, telling SFX Magazine: “Never say never.”

The series’ longtime leading man is currently preparing to return to the role in the first of The Walking Dead spin-off films.

Though, Lincoln isn’t ruling out a return to the zombie series, commenting: “The easy answer is I have no idea.

“I don’t think it’s written yet, but I would never say never to that because everybody that’s still doing the TV show are dear friends.”

Lincoln also discussed the show’s longevity, adding: “It’s an extraordinary feat that they’re still going and making this beautiful and groundbreaking show that still resonates with the world.”

Executive producer and former showrunner Scott Gimple announced they planned to create three AMC original films to explore the character of Rick after his almost death.

The films will follow Rick’s adventures after the events of ninth season episode What Comes After.

Fans last saw Rick being airlifted to parts unknown with his family believing he had died in a horrific explosion.

Fans have been speculating whether Rick would ever see his family or friends again, and how the films will tie into the popular series.

The Walking Dead’s current showrunner Angela Kang stated in 2019 that, “the door is always open” for Rick’s, sure to be epic, return.

Adding, Lincoln “can come back any time”.

Lincoln also expressed his excitement for the character’s return in the film, saying: “I can’t wait. I’m really excited about broadening the scale and scope of the story and finding out where Ricky is.”

“We need to get the first one absolutely right and that’s why it’s taken longer than we anticipated – and obviously with the pandemic,” he further noted.

Production of the spin-off film has suffered a lengthy delay due to COVID-19, but Gimple confirmed in 2020 that the film would still be going ahead.

Lincoln hopes to start filming sometime this Summer in the United States.

Until then, fans will have to wait patiently to see if Lincoln’s return to the series ever transpires and, if it does, whether we’ll see our cowboy-hat-wearing hero first on TV or cinema screens.

The final season of The Walking Dead is scheduled for release sometime in Autumn 2021, and the release date for the spin-off film has yet to be announced.
