In the penultimate episode, Jo Davidson (played by Kelly Macdonald) was interrogated by Patricia Carmichael (Anna Maxwell Martin), DI Steve Arnott (Martin Compston) and Superintendent Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar) on the grounds she was a corrupt officer. During her interrogation, Hastings, Arnott and Carmichael deciphered Davidson’s family tree. has everything you need to know about Davidson’s relation to criminal Tommy Hunter (Brian McCardie).

How is Jo Davidson related to Tommy Hunter on Line of Duty?

After weeks of speculation, the details behind Jo Davidson’s family were finally uncovered by AC-12.

Earlier in the series, Davison’s DNA was found at the house of her former partner and colleague Farida Jatri (Anneika Rose).

When the DNA was run through the national database, it was found to match Davidson’s by 100%.

From there, officers detected Davidson’s DNA had a “strong partial match” to John Thomas ‘Tommy’ Hunter.

When asked by Carmichael in an intense interrogation scene if she was related by blood onto Tommy Hunter, Jo at first responded “no comment.”

Arnott shared further analysis of the DNA found traces of homozygosity.

Further analysis found Tommy Hunter was not only Davidson’s uncle but also her father.

Eagle-eyed Line of Duty fans will have spotted earlier in the episode Davidson believed her father to be a corrupt officer and was unaware her Uncle Tommy was actually her father.

However, earlier in the episode to revealed to DI Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure) her mother, Samantha Davidson, was Tommy Hunter’s sister.

Unfortunately, Jo did not reveal to Fleming or in her interview who she originally believed her real father to be.

Davidson’s mother Samantha Davidson died in 1996. An inquest into her death found she died from suicide.

During her interrogation, Davidson implied her mother Samantha was driven to her death.

She said: “She was born into it [organised crime], like me. She hated everything her family stood for. Her brother, Tommy, what a piece of work he was. He controlled mum’s life.”

Davidson admitted she knew her mother had been raped as a teenager but did not know the details or the identity of the rapist.

She said: “My mum was just a girl. She was 15, raped. She told me. Though I never knew the details, forced to go through with the pregnancy, Tommy sent her south of Glasgow under her mum’s mutiny.

“I had no idea about any of this until Tommy came looking. I just turned 16, he heard I was doing well in school, never been in trouble, plus no one knew me here.

“He wanted me for the police he said. To do his bidding, to be under his control.

“My mum couldn’t bear the thought of me being with uncle Tommy. She knew she couldn’t protect me.”

When asked by Arnott if this played a factor in Samantha’s suicide, Jo broke down in tears nodding her head.

Line of Duty fans will know Tommy Hunter, the leader of the clandestinely organised crime syndicate operating throughout the city and a paedophile, became a police informant and was later killed by the OCG.

Davidson shared Tommy did not die simply because he came as an informant, but because he had begun relationships with corrupt police officers who started to turn against him.

She revealed Tommy felt betrayed and threatened to expose them, suggesting it was the corrupt police officers who were behind Tommy’s death, not the OCG itself.

Davidson also insisted bent copper DI Matthew Cottan (Craig Parkinson) orchestrated the plan to kill Tommy.

Elsewhere, it was revealed Jo’s cousin, Darren Hunter, who is Tommy Hunter’s son was one of the main suspects in the murder of Christopher Lawrence.

The death of Christopher Lawrence in police custody was one of the many cases murdered journalist Gail Vella (Andi Osho) was investigating before her death.

Hastings suggested Davidson knew about Vella’s murder, to protect her name and family’s involvement in the OCG to which Davidson predictably replied, “no comment.”
