Torchwood star John Barrowman breaks hearts with secret visit to Ianto's Shrine

John Barrowman has broken every Torchwood fan’s heart with a secret visit to Ianto’s Shrine in Cardiff.

After the beloved character, played by Gareth David-Lloyd, was killed off in the Children of Earth series in 2009, fans created a shrine in Cardiff, which has remained intact for 12 years.

John, who plays Captain Jack Harkness in Doctor Who and its spin-off, masked up for a visit to pay his respects – and pointed out that it worked pretty well as a disguise.

Snapping a selfie, he wrote: ‘Out for my walk and nobody knew it was me paying some respect to #Ianto Jb.’

Gareth responded on Twitter, quipping: ‘I did, you woke me up. I was under the bench.’

It might have been almost 10 years since the last episode of Torchwood, but John and Gareth are still very much keeping their legacies alive in the Whoniverse.

Just this month, John reprised his role as Captain Jack for the New Year special, with the time agent breaking the Doctor out of space prison and helping the ‘fam’ to defeat the Daleks.

Jack also returned to the role in 2020 after a ten year absence from the show, appearing alongside Doctor Jodie Whittaker in the episode Fugitive of the Judoon.

Meanwhile, he and Gareth have reunited with David Tennant for a series of Big Finish audio dramas.

Torchwood: Absent Friends, set to be released in May, will see the 10th Doctor (David) team up with Captain Jack and Cardiff’s finest alien investigators.

Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood first aired on the BBC in 2006 and ran for four series.

It followed a group of alien hunters, who look into extraterrestrial incidents at the Torchwood Institute.

Torchwood is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
