Yellowstone season 4 theories: Rainwater and John actually related – here’s how
Yellowstone: Set decorator discusses creating Beth's flashbacks
A recent post on Yellowstone’s official Instagram page has tipped fans off to a shocking revelation coming John Dutton’s way next season. After the game-changing twists in the latest thrilling instalment, a theory about the ranch’s most persistent rival Thomas Rainwater could change John’s life forever.
Several fans of the Paramount series Yellowstone are convinced the show’s two biggest rivals could, in fact, be related.
John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner) has been under constant threat from Chief Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham), who is determined to claim back the Yellowstone for his ancestors.
As the series stands, Rainwater is one of several prime suspects for the attacks on John and his children, Kayce (Luke Grimes) and Beth (Kelly Reilly) in the heart-stopping season finale.
However, a new theory has proposed the two most powerful men in Montana could, in fact, be related.

The suggestion was sparked by a recent post on the show’s Instagram page, which featured an intimidating clip of Rainwater.
In the footage, Rainwater stares John down and says: “We want the same thing for very different reasons.”
He then adds: “And we can have our fight later. But we’ll have nothing to fight over if they build a city here.”
The highly coveted and vast ranch has been eyed by the likes of Dan Jenkins (Danny Huston) and the Beck brothers as the ideal spot for a potential casino or resort.
Meanwhile, chairman of the Confederated Tribes of Broken Rock Thomas Rainwater simply wants to preserve the land in honour of the state’s ancestors, from whom it was taken.
Given their shared connection and relentless passion for the prized land, fans have proposed Rainwater and Dutton could be revealed as half-brothers in an ironic twist of fate.
The theory gained quite some traction as one Yellowstone enthusiast sounded off in the Instagram comments about the idea.
They wrote: “I swear it would be a huge twist if Rainwater and John are half brothers.”

Below, several fans agreed with the concept, with the twist potentially bringing the show’s themes to a satisfying resolution in an upcoming instalment.
One fan summed up the two men’s goals: “Fight for family/ traditions in lifestyles/ land to preserve for future lifestyles.”
Despite their ongoing feud, the two men have proven themselves remarkably similar over the three seasons.
Although fans met John’s father, John Dutton Sr. (Dabney Coleman) in the season two finale, much of their family history still remains unknown.
Rainwater even admitted he believed for some time he was of Mexican descent before discovering his true heritage, as revealed in his first scene in the opening episode.
There have already been a number of flashbacks over Yellowstone’s three seasons which have revealed more about the troubled Dutton family history piece by piece.
When the series eventually returns for a fourth season next year, it could finally be Thomas Rainwater’s turn to have his origin story laid bare.
Yellowstone will return in 2021 on Paramount and Peacock.
